School Committee Adds AI Course to Graduation Track

School Committee · Meeting of September 24, 2026

Millbury schools add an AI course option and close out a money-losing first year of summer meals. The School Committee voted 4-0 to accept a Principles of Artificial Intelligence course, piloted by teachers Joe Duke and Pat DiGregorio, as a STEM graduation option starting with the Class of 2027. Director of Food Services Mandy Donaldson reported the district's debut Summer Eats program served 4,199 meals over seven weeks at a financial loss, saying "next year we have data" to plan better.

Director of Instructional Technology Jeff Berthiaume disclosed a summer phishing incident that compromised roughly 13 staff passwords and detailed a $105,000 Wi-Fi upgrade funded 60 percent by the federal E-Rate program. The committee also authorized utility supply contracts beyond three years with consultant Tradition Energy, declared surplus copy machine toner, and appointed members Kristen Birch and Jessica Bristol to negotiate with SEIU Local 888 — all votes passing 4-0 with Birch absent.
